Ohio Federation of Teachers Endorses Rachel Crooks for the Ohio Statehouse

October 11, 2018

The Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT), a union of professionals representing 20,000 members in 55 locals across the state that include public school educators and support staff, higher education faculty and support staff, and public employees, announced their endorsement of Rachel Crooks, candidate for the Ohio House of Representatives. Ms. Crooks will be challenging Bill Reineke in the November midterm election for the District 88 seat, which includes all of Sandusky County and a majority of Seneca County. OFT is the state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers.

According to OFT President, Melissa Cropper, “We believe Rachel will be a strong advocate for our teachers, faculty and staff, and the students they serve. As someone who has worked in higher education for the last decade, Rachel understands the importance of quality education for all.”

OFT focuses on issues at the statewide level that include legislation, public policy and education policy, communications and political advocacy. They advocate for sound, commonsense public education policies, including high academic and conduct standards for students and greater professionalism for teachers and school staff; and excellence in public service through cooperative problem-solving and workplace innovations.

“I am proud to earn the endorsement from the OFT and their hard-working members across Ohio,” Crooks states. “I have spent my career working in higher education so I know firsthand the issues that affect our teachers and schools. Sadly, under Republican leadership, Ohio’s education system has fallen from 5th to 22nd in the nation. As the next state representative for my district, I am committed to finding solutions to current problems, and will fight for better funding and stronger public schools.”

OFT’s endorsement is the latest addition to an expanding list of groups and community leaders that have endorsed Crooks, including: President Barack Obama, Senator Sherrod Brown, City of Bellevue Mayor Kevin Strecker, Gloria Steinem, the Ohio Education Association, Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, Ohio Association of Public School Employees, Ohio Farmers Union, Sheet Metal Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division (SMART-TD), EMILY’s List, Run For Something, Matriots, MoveOn, BlueAmerica PAC, Launch Progress PAC, Planned Parenthood, People for the American Way, Only If You Run, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, and Teamsters Ohio D.R.I.V.E.. Her campaign was also given the Gun Sense Candidate Distinction by Moms Demand Action.
